Too Short? Get some height!

All of us shorties out there are constantly shopping for a way to make us look taller. Without even knowing it we choose our clothing and shoes to achieve the illusion we stand taller than our short 5 ft frame. Here are some tips that help give you the height you have so longed for.

Posture

Probably the most important tip is to stand up straight with your shoulders back. Sitting and standing up straight can add a few very helpful inches to how tall you are perceived to be.

Hairstyle

I know what you are thinking I don’t want some ridiculous bouffant hairstyle to achieve my height goal. The trick is to have just a little volume at the crown and not let your hair fall flat and smooth on top. Hairstyles that frame your face and that are shorter on the sides can make you look longer and not wider. You should avoid volume on the sides of your hair at all costs.

So remember:

♥ Hair should frame your face

♥ Hair looks best short on the sides

♥ Avoid wide styles or volume at the sides at all costs

Clothing

When dressing you should avoid horizontal lines at all costs. Wear vertical patterns that draw the eye down. For coats, you want to wear one that is not long in length and not bulky as that will make you look wider instead of taller. Wearing a monochromatic outfit especially in black or navy will help you long and lean. Do not wear color blocked clothing that will break your body into short blocks. Stick to tailored garments and avoid slouchy or oversize clothing that can overwhelm you. Dresses should hit above the knee. Mini dresses and skirts are great for giving length and showing off your legs if you feel comfortable doing so. Long sleeves or sleeveless tops and dresses are a short girl’s best friend. Both will help your arms look their longest. Cuffed or cropped pants can give you the horizontal lines that will shorten you. This does not apply to fitted skinny leg jeans or pants that are a slim fit to your legs. The best pant solution is a floor-skimming pant with heels. And a high-waisted pant can help fake a long torso.

So remember:

Shoes

Matching your pants or tights to your shoes in colors like black, navy, gray, tan, taupe, and brown will always make your legs look longer. Also, lets face it the taller the heels the taller you look. Of course you want to choose the tallest shoes that you can confidently walk in. If you find heels challenging opt for a wedge with a hidden platform. Nude heels are a great way to elongate your legs.

So remember

♥ Wear tall heels or wedges

♥ Nude heels elongate your legs

GM: Who came up with the bag throwing?

IB: I did. Doing stuff like that, seeing the consumer face-to-face when we give them free stuff is really fun. It ended up being this ridiculously crazy thing.

GM: Where did the idea for Matt & Nat come from?
IB: Our family is from India. I didn't grow up in a religious household - my mom is Hindu and my dad is Sikh - but they exposed up to all kinds of Indian culture. When I was 18, one of Dad's good friends, who was head of the Hare Krishna temple in Montreal, asked me out of the blue to go vegetarian for 30 days. I did so out of respect, and it had a profound effect on my whole life. I continued being vegetarian at Concordia, where I majored in marketing and minored in corporate law, and gave up leather as well.

In my last semester in 1995, when I was deciding between law school or an MBA, I had to do a course called entrepreneurship - which I really didn't want to take. As part of the curriculum, we had to come up with a business and try to raise funding for it. I thought it was interesting that there weren't any companies doing fashionable, utilitarian items that were also vegan and eco-conscious, so that led to Matt & Nat. In spite of not getting any funding and only 77 percent on my paper, I dropped the idea of law school or an MBA and started the business [launched in 1996]. I still have no explanation for it.

We've been amazed by the seemingly overnight success of shoe brand Pour la Victoire. Just four years ago the brand was created, inspired by staging a revolution in the industry and fulfilling a need for luxury shoes at an affordable price point. Read on to get the scoop on designers Jay Adoni and David Giordano of Pour la Victoire, courtesy of Fashion Week Daily. Who knew they had such a charming sense of humor!

Disenchanted by "doctor's office" shoe brands charging top dollar, PLV Studio Inc. masterminds Jay Adoni and David Giordano banded together to produce the edgy and attainable footwear line, Pour la Victoire. In just four short years, the start-up exploded on the scene with red carpet PAs, editrix approvals (Carine is a fan!), and a growing presence in 30 countries. The high-energy, tit-for-tat duo kept The Daily on our toes. MARIA DENARDO

What were you up to before the shoe business? D: I grew up on the south shore of Long Island and majored in economics. I’ve always been interested in fashion, but never knew I was going to have a job in it. J: I grew up in Israel and majored in the sexual behavior of humans. D: He’s joking. For a second, I thought about not getting him for the interview—and I’m always right.

How did you two meet? J: JDate.com. D: My 75-year-old mother is on WholeLottaFish.com. I feel weird about that. You mean PlentyofFish.com? J: She’s going to think we’re Dolce & Gabbana over here! To be serious, we met through Sam Edelman. Sam had called me to help him out in his business when he was in a lot of trouble. David was Sam’s number one asset, so I told him if he ever wanted to do a shoe company together to call me. D: I called months later. We had lunch and made a deal. People always talk about the energy we throw out; everyone wants to work for us because of it. We’re a great team. We’re two of the most hard-headed, impossible individuals you’ll ever meet. We deserve each other!

Back to business. What was your first fashion job? J: I opened a boutique early on with denim pants, t-shirts, gowns, and other apparel. I had a factory above the store, so we did made-to-order. I came to America by myself with $10 in my pocket when I was 17. I was young, healthy, and good looking. At 18, I opened up a shoe factory and started my own company. When the shoe company went public in 1987, it made me aware of the dealings on Wall Street. It was sold to an English company in 1993. I had a non-compete, so I couldn’t work in the shoe business for a while. That's how I ended up as a stock broker. That lasted a week until I opened my own firm and built it into a big business. D: In ’96, I got a job with BCBG when they were a small company, and Max [Azria] was in the office every day. I worked for Theory after that and then Sam Edelman.

How would you compare the Wall Street scene and the fashion world? J: I think the word ‘swagger’ comes up for both crowds. D: You have to be a killer.

Who’s more high maintenance—a fashionista or a heavy-hitting stock broker? J: I think everyone is high maintenance.

How did you come up with the name? D: When we were thinking of names, Jay and I always joked that everyone sounded like doctors on Park Avenue. J: Like a gynecologist in Westchester. D: They were naming the brand after themselves, and we wanted to do something more aspirational. Something that was hard to say and hard to spell; something where women would correct each other. When I first got into the shoe business, I remember women being so snotty with each other on how to pronounce Louboutin. We wanted to create that same velvet rope atmosphere.

Do customers often mispronounce Pour La Victoire? D: All the time. They say Pour La Victory, Pour La Victoria.

Tell us about your handbag line. Who is Kelsi Dagger? J: It came out of a song, “Chelsea Dagger.” D: We had the experience with Pour La Victoire where no one could say it or spell it, so we wanted something that sticks after the first time you said it. Kelsi is fierce and empowering to women.

How do your handbag lines compete in the market? D: We just sent a shipment to Nordstrom, and they sold out within three weeks.

The brand was so young when the economy took a hit. Did you feel the impact? J: This is our fourth year, and we’ve been doubling every year since we started. Our Wall Street mentality carried over. D: Every move we make with the brand is very careful. We treat this brand like it’s YSL. The economy played into our hands because people were cutting back on irresponsible purchases. We were offering them a lower price without compromising on fashion.

What celebrity created the biggest stir wearing Pour La Victoire heels? D: Anne Hathaway at the Golden Globes. The next week she went on The View in another pair of shoes. It gave us legitimacy with a lot of high-end accounts.

Are you eyeing any celebrities for future campaigns? D: I don’t know if we’d do a campaign with a celebrity. J: Snookie is definitely not getting shoes from us. D: I’d rather work with top stylists and photographers—those are celebrities to me.

Where do you wine and dine your business partners? J: Serge, Trattoria Dell'Arte, and Philippe Chow. David, you have a couple holes downtown. McDonald’s? D: I love Mexican. Móle is great!

Who do you admire in the industry? J: We know people so well, it’s hard to admire them. D: We admire Christian Louboutin and Giuseppe Zanotti for what they’ve done with their brands. For RTW, I love what Marc Jacobs has done, and Phoebe Philo is a genius. J: I really admire old school Italian shoe makers that are true artists from the inside out. That’s who I get my fulfillment from, along with our customers.

Jay, a lot of well-known shoe designers who’ve worked for you have gone on to start their own companies. J: Steve Madden wrote in his book that a lot of what he knows, he learned from me. Jeffrey Campbell also worked for me. It’s the greatest compliment. Winners produce winners. I see them at industry events, but we don’t hang out. At the end of the day, they’re competition.

Would you ever do a reality TV show? J: How much?

Is the shoe industry getting overcrowded? D: It’s become more crowded, but the people who started it all have an advantage over all the copycats out there. We were lucky to be one of the first brands to offer high fashion shoes for $200. We have great relationships with our stores and have more knowledge about what’s worked and what hasn’t. We love it. Bring everyone on!

Where is footwear headed? J: Labor costs are rising and leather is a commodity. I think paying $1,000 for a pair of leather shoes will be the norm.

What's on your bucket list? D: That means before we die. J: Oh, Jesus! I want to write a book called The Book of Life about my life. It will inspire young people to live with "no guts, no glory," like John Wayne said. I want it to be read in schools. I speak at NYU now, and I see the biggest problem that's lacking in this country is the partnership between businesses and colleges to groom our new prospects. D: I'm going to ghostwrite Jay's book and live in his hotel. And I'll be attending every World Cup from now until I die.

Some of you in the NYC area may have met our #1 employee Bud when popping into our showroom. He has been a loyal sidekick of The Love Affair owner, Geri for 15 years. Bud has done his time and now will be lending his doggy expertise as our dog accessory buyer.
Both Bud and Geri have worked years together in the fashion industry. He has done everything from model and assist in the shop at Harry Barker to gaining years of professional experience at the Betsey Johnson corporate office. So some might say Bud and fashion have gone hand and hand.
Both owner Geri and Bud's thoughts were why wouldn't shoppers like to buy some cute sandals for themselves and a sweet collar for their pooch all in one stop? That was our thoughts exactly when we decided to add Designer Dog Accessories to our assortment.

A very dear friend of ours recently started her own company Bow & Arrow. We immediately fell in love ♥. She does unique pieces for bridal, special occasion, and everyday wear. We couldn't be happier to have some of her beautiful accessory designs on The Love Affair this Fall!

Designer Elizabeth Katz created Bow & Arrow out of necessity when getting married in 2008. She couldn't believe that everything bridal was so one-directional. After creating custom pieces for herself for her own wedding, she realized she had stumbled onto a passion and Bow & Arrow was born. With quality fabrics she creates beautiful pieces for any occasion. Her aim is to create adornments as individual as the individual wearing them.

We're not sure if she aimed for our hearts but that arrow went right through...And we know it will go through yours too.

Our first style from Charles Jourdan is in!

French designer Charles Jourdan was born in the same year as Coco Chanel, and known best for his designs of woman's shoes starting in 1919.

Originally trained as a shoemaker, after World War I Jourdan opened a shoe shop in Romans in the Drome region of France, the center of France's shoe industry. His lines of women's shoes prospered, and this became the focus of his career. After only two years Jourdan moved his shoe company into a factory on Boulevard Voltaire in 1921.

Jourdan and his sons opened his first boutique in Paris in 1957. They were granted a license to design and manufacture shoes under the Christian Dior brand in 1959 and in more recent years have also created designs under the Pierre Cardin label.

Charles Jourdan died in 1976, but the company continued under the leadership of his sons.

He was well known for providing stilettos to lavish shoe lovers like Imelda Marcos. And we couldn't be happier to have his new collection on The Love Affair.

In December of 2009, The Love Affair, a new online boutique based out of New York City officially launched its website, www.shoptheloveaffair.com.

The ecommerce site is the first of its kind to provide NYC shoppers unique designer products and same day delivery.

Coming from a four year sales career in New York’s fashion industry, founder Geri Williams decided to create The Love Affair as a solution to the lack of access to limited designer product and the increase in poor customer service. Williams’ prior position as Senior Account Executive at Betsey Johnson LLC stimulated her passion to fulfill the needs of her customers and buyers. Relationships with department and specialty stores enhanced her understanding of the criteria most buyers are forced to follow for store chains and boutiques, where mass markets are favored. “I live in NYC and I can shop all day and still come home empty handed. I feel I often have to search far and wide to find designer pieces that fit my style and taste. I know there are other edgy, independent shoppers out there wanting the same without having to spend the time,” states Williams.

The Love Affair offers customers a variety of accessories from niche contemporary brands such as Bodhi, L.A.M.B., nOir, Modern Vintage and White Trash Charms. Product from smaller local designers including the headwear line I Love Factory and handbag line ko.des are also be available. All Manhattan purchases through The Love Affair will be delivered the same day free of charge. The site hopes to blossom with new designs and designers each season. As Williams says, “If there's something great being made, I want to showcase that talent and share it with the rest of the world. Any girl should be able to pick up a magazine, spot a killer product, immediately find it, adore it, and rock it.”
